Protein
Protein is an essential component of any diet and is vital for health.
However, Warfarin and protein together can have some undesired results. Anyone who is taking Warfarin to prevent unwanted blood clotting should avoid consuming excessive amounts of this nutrient. Studies have shown that there is a link between high protein intake and decreasing INR readings, potentially putting patients at an increased risk of blood clots.
Normal consumption of protein poses no risk and should be encouraged to maintain a healthy balanced diet.
However, Warfarin users should avoid,
- high protein diets, such as the Atkins diet
- protein supplements and shakes
- any sudden increase or decrease in the amount of protein they consume
