Mechanical Heart Valve

The heart contains 4 valves which have the job of keeping blood flowing through the heart in the right direction. If a valve becomes diseased or damaged it can affect the flow of blood through the heart causing health problems. In severe cases it may be necessary to repair the faulty heart valve or where this is not possible replace the valve altogether.

One option is a mechanical heart valve replacement. These valves are made of ultra-smooth carbon but, because they are artificial, there is a risk of a blood clot developing on the surface of the valve. For this reason, anyone who has had a mechanical heart valve fitted will need to take an anticoagulant, like Warfarin, for the rest of their lives.
